In the heart of Newbury, the pub that bears the Berkshire town’s name is hiding a secret from the shoppers who pass its door. Climb the stairs and you’ll find a spacious decked roof terrace, a pleasant extension to this modern pub that was taken over in 2022 by James Allen, who runs the Fox Inn in the nearby village of Hermitage.
Executive chef Cleston Dsouza heads the team in the kitchen, serving up stylish pub classics, steaks and fish dishes.
There’s separate lunch menu of superior sandwiches such as grilled steak, sauteed onion and avocado on ciabatta and a vegan menu that includes wild mushroom stroganoff and roasted butternut squash, spinach and chickpea curry. Children are specially catered for, too, and there are some tempting desserts such as warm gooey double chocolate brownie with blood orange sorbet and humble crumble bramble blackberry and apple with Devonshire custard.
A comprehensive drinks offer includes wines from around the globe, cocktails and ales from Greene King, and the Newbury is big on weekend entertainment with live acts filling the terrace at weekends.
