The Grade Two listed pub, which sits in the picturesque Lancashire village of Downham, has long had a reputation locally for serving up some of the region’s best pub food.
The kitchen specialises in “same day” seafood, often served only hours after being caught, as well as top-quality, locally-shot game and the best produce the bountiful county has to offer.
It’s part of pub entrepreneur Joycelyn Neve’s flourishing Seafood Pub Company, which is becoming well-known not just in Lancashire but across the country for its gorgeous, well-kept pubs and stellar food – so much so, that the company has won many coveted across just a few years.
Neve took on the site in 2011, seeing such potential for the site that she outbid Marco Pierre White for it, sending the culinary behemoth home publess.
The Assheton Arms’ ranking in Top 50 this year marks the latest in a slew of accolades for the pub, which include being named Lancashire Life’s Dining Pub of the Year.
For travellers who want to stay and take in the Assheton’s beautiful surroundings, the pub has a selection of exquisite boutique rooms at reasonable prices.
Menu highlights have included Southern fried cod with gem salad, avocado, lime and chilli mayo; steamed Korean buns with crispy duck, spring onions, cucumber and chilli relish; and roast hake with smoked salmon potato pancake, steamed baby spinach and shellfish butter sauce.
