Well-known chef Margot Henderson, who runs the Rochelle Canteen in London’s Shoreditch, has moved to her first spot outside the capital with The Three Horseshoes in Batcombe, Somerset.
The 17th Century pub in the quaint village, is located between Batcombe’s medieval church and the village hall.
The inn has been restored with beamed ceilings, open fireplaces, flagstone floors and boasts five beautiful bedrooms, a dining room and bar. There is also a private dining room that overlooks the garden that can accommodate up to 26 guests.
Henderson reportedly divides her time between the Batcombe pub and her London restaurant, leaving the day-to-day duties to former Six Portland Road chef Nye Smith.
Featured in the Michelin Guide it is described as a pub that lets “ingredients to speak for themselves, with local Somerset produce a feature.”
The menu which changes daily with the season, uses Somerset ingredients. It offers hearty mains such as Smoked Haddock, Mash & Saffron, Cottage Pie, and Ox Cheek & Pickled Walnut Pie. Plus, there are delicious starters such as Ham Hock & Parsley Terrine and Fried Quail & Alioli with desserts such as Westcombe Cheddar, White Lake Tor, Oat Cakes and favourites such as Sticky Toffee pudding and Bakewell Tart. There is also a bar menu featuring pork pie, cheddar toastie and mackerel pate.
In a review by William Sitewell in The Telegraph he states that the menu: “Takes your nightmare of school food and elevates it to dreamlike status.”
The pub also has a walled garden, created by local Batcombe designer Libby Russell. The five bedrooms for overnight guests have freestanding bathtubs, rain-showers, and are decorated and designed with antiques and art by Frances Penn. The bar is stocked with real ales, craft beer, local ciders, and selected wines.
The Three Horseshoes owner is Max Wigram, former art gallery owner who lives nearby.
